Bitmaps and Vectors

Vector and Bitmap Graphics

Vector graphics are created using mathematics while Bitmap graphics are created using pixels. The areas in which vector graphics exceed in are graphic design and logos because these usually have limited colours and are made up of lines and solid colours. Bitmap graphics are a better choice for complicated graphics and photos because there are a lot of colours and other things that vectors couldn't recreate. Vector graphics usually have a smaller file size depending on complexity because it doesn't save every pixel just the mathematical formula to recreate the graphic. Because vector graphics are made using mathematics, they can be recreated at any size without losing quality which would happen if bitmap graphics were made too large.

Vector Graphics

Advantages
Can be scaled to any size without lose of quality due to being comprised using mathematical equations
Generally smaller file than bitmap graphics

Disadvantages
Can't look as "realistic" as bitmap graphics
Can have a larger file size than bitmap if the file is complex e.g. geographic map
Can't be used for photographs

Bitmap Graphics

Advantages
Can look "realistic"
Simple data structure - matrix of cells
Faster loading time compared to vector

Disadvantages
File can be very large in size for large resolution images
Scaling an image too large will reveal the pixels that make up the image resulting in a bad quality image
Requires anti-aliasing for smooth angular lines
