New and Emerging Technologies

Leica S

Camera technology is always emerging and in December 2012, Leica released arguably the best camera ever made, the Leica S. It costs around £16,000. The camera is 37.5MP which is an extremely high resolution picture able to catch ever little detail. It also has a sensitivity range of 100-1600 which makes the camera very good for low-light situations and is still able to catch all the detail another camera would miss in these situations. It has a 2GB image buffer and 166MB transfer rate to allow for masses of photos to be taken in a very short period of time. The limit to how many pictures can be taken is only determined by the SD card because of the huge buffer and fast transfer speed. The rear LCD screen has 920,000 pixels allowing the photographer to get a very good analysis of pictures just by looking at the screen and not having to transfer them to a computer first. This technology will allow for far better photos from photographers and overall, higher quality images.

3D Printing

3D Printing is the process of printing a digital 3D model as a solid three dimensional object. The process is usually done using powder and liquid. This technology is not very new but is always developing. There are currently many applications of this technology, the main one being rapid prototypes of phones, cars, games consoles, statues etc. As well as prototypes, rapid manufacturing is another use of 3D printing. This is unproven but technological advancements in the field have enabled faster, cheaper printing which makes manufacturing the product using 3D printers more viable. This can be used heavily in digital graphics to create physical 3D media instead of the regular 2D paper prints. Graphic designers will be able to design 3D models of their art and print it out in 3D.

Graphics Tablet

Graphics tablets are input devices which allow users to draw on the tablet which is then converted to a digital signal and received by the computer so it acts like they are drawing on the computer itself. Graphics designers find this very useful because using the mouse to draw is very hard to do and it will make certain jobs in applications like Photoshop a lot easier such as using the brush tool to paint something onto a canvas. It also makes airbrushing pictures a lot easier which was difficult to do using the mouse. This makes for better pictures and makes applications like Photoshop a lot easier to use.

iPhone

The iPhone has been revolutionary in graphic design mostly due to the apps that are available for it and its high quality front and back camera. Nowadays, graphic designers can easily use their iPhones to take high quality pictures of things when they do not have access to their professional photography software. They can also edit and publish the photos right from their iPhone using apps such as Photoshop, PhotoGene and Filterstorm. These apps have a lot of features to change simply things like colour and brightness. They can also do manual editing such as brush tools etc. They can then publish these photos directly from their phone using Twitter or Facebook.

MacBook Pro

The MacBook Pro is often used by modern graphic designers today because of its mobility and how user-friendly it is. They also have retina displays and large screens which is very useful for designers. Popular graphics apps such as Adobe Photoshop are made more the OSX operating system. The systems also have a GeForce GTX 650M as a graphics card which is great for graphics apps. These MacBook's are designed for mobility and battery life. Using these, designers are able to work when they aren't at home or at the office.
